Wanted: Manikako Dollmakers

Manikako will hold a doll-making workshop for the GMA Kapuso Foundation beneficiaries at the opening day of the Noel Discovery Bazaar and Christmas Shop Expo on November 26, 2008, 2PM at the World Trade Center, Manila.

Click for details:

There will be 50 less privileged children in the workshop – which means at least 10 volunteers will have to be on board to teach the kids how to make their own Manikako. If you're interested to join the crew, please drop a comment here or send me an email: givehope@manikako.com

Manikako will also have a booth at the expo from November 26 to 30. Please tell your friends that Manikako kits make nice Christmas gifts!

We need help to help more children! Please join us and give love (and a Manikako) this Christmas!

[Video] Manikako: A Child's Playtime

A tribute to the efforts of Manikako in providing creative, artistic and tangible solutions to the ever persistent problem of child abuse in the country. We hope that Manikako never tires of their advocacy, and that this video may help in getting more people to understand and be interested in the state of child abuse in the Philippines. Video under the cut.

More than eat, sleep, and learn, a child needs to play. )

Manikako @ ToyCon!

Last year, Manikako launched its first booth at the 6th Annual Toy Convention held at SM Megamall. This year, we're doing it again! Join us as we create a brighter future, one stitch at a time at the ToyCon this coming Saturday and Sunday, June 14-15, 2008.

To our volunteers who wish to be part of the booth staff , please send an e-mail to givehope@manikako.com with the following details ASAP:

Name:
Day of choice: (Saturday or Sunday)
Preferred Shift: (Morning or Afternoon)

As a Manikako volunteer, your job will be to help create custom dolls requested by customers. You should also be able to explain Manikako's mission to help the needy through creativity. New volunteers may need to refer to this entry: http://community.livejournal.com/manikako/630.html

Manikako will only require 5 volunteers per day due to the limited space and number of IDs. Therefore, only the first few people to send their e-mails will be included in the list.

The staff will have a briefing before the event. Thank you very much and we hope to see you at the booth!

ARTHOC FOUNDING CHAIR

Delivered at the opening of Manikako Doll Fair, February 16, at the Podium and originally posted at the Barbing Pinay Multiply.

"Is there room for art in an evacuation Center? Can creativity still spring from the silence of a rape victim or the shame of a prostituted woman? So what if an orphan doodles, or if a battered wife prefers hers sky red and not blue?"

These are the opening lines from a front-page Philippine Daily Inquirer article on the workshops we conducted among Typhoon Reming survivors in Daraga, Albay, in 2007 as part of Alma Quinto’s House of Comfort Art Project, which she conceptualized for trauma, interrupted, an international art project I curated and organized aiming to explore the links between trauma, art and healing.

The newspaper article quoted me as saying that art provides the platform and the process for the "survivors to affirm that they can create again, that they can rebuild." And as Quinto, the artist-facilitator puts it: "When you begin to imagine again, that is also the time when you begin to hope."

Indeed, to imagine is to hope.
